Council confirms appointments to redevelopment commission and zoning board

The Lawrence City Common Council confirmed seats on the redevelopment commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals during its Jan. 15 meeting.
For the redevelopment commission the council nominated and appointed Sarah Whitaker and Michael Townsend; the clerk recorded nine votes for each nominee. The council also named three members of the Board of Zoning Appeals'Faith Alvarez, Eugene West and Karen Horstman'each receiving nine recorded votes, and appointed Shell (Chelle) Carey as the BZA alternate with nine recorded votes.
The council president opened nominations and then called a roll-call vote in alphabetical order of councilors; each councilor publicly read the names they supported. The clerk recorded the results for the minutes. Appointees will serve terms governed by statute and any relevant local ordinances until successors are appointed and qualified, the council president said.
Councilors did not discuss any individual nominees in depth during the public portion of the meeting; nominations, seconds, and roll-call votes occurred as a group per appointment category.
