The Tangipahoa Parish personnel committee unanimously approved a Title I/state-funded attendance specialist position aimed at reducing chronic absenteeism at schools identified as having rates above the district average.
A presenter said the position was offered by the state after the district’s attendance data showed several schools with high chronic absenteeism. The presenter told the committee the position will be federally funded through Title I and will report to Miss Cece Lanier. The specialist will work with schools that exceed district averages for chronic absenteeism, reach out to families before school starts, support incentive programs and help with follow-up.
The presenter described the role as distinct from existing student services and truancy work and said it will focus strictly on schools with chronic absentee problems. “This person will strictly deal with those that are schools that are way over the district and state average for chronic absenteeism,” the presenter said. She added the state offered the funding and that it is typically allocated year by year; the district will submit data after the year to determine eligibility for further funding.
When asked how long funding is expected to last, the presenter said the allocation is generally provided on a one‑year basis and that improved attendance could make the district ineligible for future funding — the intended outcome. Voting opened and closed and the motion passed unanimously.
