Committee members discussed the age and condition of multiple units, noting models from 1989 through 2007 and ongoing repair needs.
Committee members said the renewals are temporary while construction phases and site additions remove the need for some modulars. A board member noted that some units are decades old and asked staff to seek shorter renewal windows where possible so the administration can pursue replacement options. The committee approved a one-year renewal for all listed units, with direction that staff attempt to negotiate shorter terms or earlier exits if alternatives can be arranged and with the understanding that any change requires court approval.
Members also discussed contract cost structure: the leases are billed monthly (for example, entries showing $9.95 monthly) and include built-in removal costs if the parish needs a unit removed. Board members asked staff to clarify line-item calculations for certain entries that did not initially sum in the spreadsheet.
Staff and board members referenced specific school sites and upcoming construction phases that are expected to reduce the need for modular classrooms, including work at Woodland Park, Loranger, Ponchatoula High and other sites. Committee members asked for a standing plan to permit faster replacement of modulars with small permanent additions (four- or five-classroom standard units) when feasible.
The motion to renew the leases for one year and permit staff negotiation passed unanimously. Voting attendance recorded during the meeting roll call shows the following board members present and voting yes: Mingus; Piazza; Moore; Duncan; Toler; Anthony; Westmoreland; Abrams; Richards. The committee meeting then adjourned.
