Committee approves Veterans Day as a school holiday; calendar changes to be worked out

The Tangipahoa Parish School Board policy committee on March 11 approved revisions to policy GBRL to recognize Veterans Day as a holiday in the school system, with implementation to begin in the next academic year.
Mr. Toler said, "This came about from a conversation, I think, with Mr. Anthony, requesting that Veterans Day be honored as a holiday within the school system." District staff told the committee the board could make the change for the next school year and that staff would identify how to accommodate the day on the calendar, for example by using emergency days or converting a professional development day.
Board members asked whether the change would apply to 12-month employees. Mr. Piazza asked whether the policy "looks like it's gonna exclude pretty much 12 month employees" and whether the board wanted to include them. A committee speaker clarified the intent on the record that the change would apply to all 12-month employees. Mr. Anthony moved to adopt the revisions; Mr. Toler seconded. The committee voted and the motion passed unanimously.
Staff will adjust the academic calendar and return details on which existing calendar day will be moved to accommodate the new holiday.
