Council approves annexation of 8.9-acre industrial parcel to provide water for fire suppression and jobs

The South Bend Common Council on May 12 adopted Bill 14-25, annexing two parcels on the city’s far northwest side into the municipal limits to allow a warehouse expansion and to provide city water for fire suppression.
Skip Morrell, principal development planner, told council the voluntary annexation covered about 8.9 acres north of the Edison Road and Sundown Road intersection and that the site currently contains approximately 43,000 square feet of warehousing. Petitioner representative Chris Skadlewski said the expansion would add roughly 13,000 square feet for warehousing, bring about a half dozen jobs, use union labor and "pay very decent wages." He said the primary purpose of annexation was to provide water service for fire suppression.
Council discussion included thanks to the petitioner for following up on staff requests and support from the first-district representative, who encouraged sending the bill with a favorable recommendation. The council voted 9-0 to pass the ordinance.
Ending: The annexed parcels will be rezoned automatically to the city’s I (Industrial) zone on annexation; staff and the petitioner indicated the project aims to remain industrial in use and will proceed with required city services and inspections.
