Muncie board approves multiple street closures for summer and fall events; OKs downtown bistro flex space

MUNCIE — The Muncie Board of Public Works and Safety on April 30 approved several street-closure applications for community events this summer and fall and granted a routine flex-space permit for a downtown bistro.
The board approved a street closure for Urban Light Community Church’s annual community party on July 11, closing Seventh Street between Madison and Monroe for the evening. Leslie McCrory, pastor at Urban Light Community Church, told the board the church has run the event for several decades and said, “We have security detail for our church that I could call off on that event.” The board advised McCrory to plan contingencies, including emergency contacts, and approved the closure by voice vote.
The board also approved three closure requests from the Muncie Downtown Development Partnership. Cheryl Crowder of the partnership requested: - A closure for the Brink of Summer Art Walk on June 5, closing Walnut Street between Charles Street and the roundabout to allow vendor setup prior to the 5 p.m. event. - A closure for Fire Up Downtown (setup late Aug. 1 through the event on Aug. 2, with cleanup through Aug. 3) affecting Walnut Street (100 block) and portions of Adams, Charles, Jackson and Mulberry to Main for event setup and cleanup. - A closure for the Classic Arts Walk on Oct. 2, closing Walnut Street from Charles to the roundabout.
Crowder described setup and cleanup windows and noted some schedule adjustments might be needed; the board approved each application by voice vote.
Separately, Nicholas Kirkpatrick appeared to request annual flex space for Veer Maze Bistro’s patio. Kirkpatrick said, “Requesting flex space for beer Maze patio. There have been no changes to the layout since last year.” The board approved the request and noted that documents would be signed after the meeting.
Votes at a glance: The board approved the street closure for Urban Light Community Church (July 11); the Brink of Summer Art Walk (June 5); Fire Up Downtown (Aug. 1–3 setup/event/cleanup); Classic Arts Walk (Oct. 2); and the flex-space request for Veer Maze Bistro. All motions carried by voice vote.
The board recorded no special conditions for alcohol beyond recommending applicants consider contingencies and security. For Urban Light Community Church, McCrory acknowledged the church did not anticipate alcohol but said security could be arranged if needed.
Documentation: Applicants were instructed to coordinate final details with city staff; the board indicated signed documents would be available after the meeting.
