Board approves summer events schedule changes and several park event requests, with conditions for porta-potty fees and security
Summary
The board approved a date change for Muncie Black Expo and granted permits for a basketball tournament, neighborhood park party, three band concert dates and several other events; the Halton and Village Neighborhood Association will cover porta-potty cleaning fees and America’s Hometown Band must present security details before events.
Nikki Erickson, parks programming staff, presented summer programming and a set of event approval requests; the board approved multiple event requests with clarifying conditions.
Erickson said the Muncie teen internship program has selected roughly 110 youth from 148 applicants and that National Kids to the Park Day will be May 17 at Cannon Commons. She requested board approval for a date change for Muncie Black Expo (moved to July 31–Aug. 2). The board approved the date change by voice vote.
The board approved a request from Everlasting Superator Inc. (Zion Strong) to host a 5-on-5 basketball tournament at McCullough Park June 20–22; Erickson said the organizer expects 70–100 attendees, has insurance, will provide security (Muncie PD and Legacy) and will arrange any required food-safety vendor certification.
The Halton and Village Neighborhood Association requested a neighborhood park party June 21 (setup 8 a.m.–5 p.m., event 11 a.m.–3 p.m., rain date June 22) and asked the parks department for four additional trash toters, two porta-potties and restroom stocking. The board conditionally approved the event but clarified the neighborhood association must pay porta-potty cleaning fees for the department-owned units (transport and cleaning counted as pass-through costs); board members noted the group is a nonprofit and has previously helped fund park improvements.
The board approved three dates for America’s Hometown Band concerts at Westside Park (July 24, Aug. 14 and Aug. 21) with the stipulation that the group provide proof of insurance and security arrangements before event dates; board members said security will be required given expected attendance of about 150 people.
Other approvals included: - Jar Community Church: use of Altman splash pad area May 31, 1–3 p.m., for a free community event (estimated 50–60 attendees), with security provided by a retired officer whose contact information was supplied. - Fishers Amends National Tournament Trail (Indiana North Division) fishing weigh-in Aug. 9 (early access requested) — approved. - Old National Bank employee picnic June 21, approved for a group of about 50; Erickson confirmed no vendors planned.
All approvals recorded in the meeting were made by motions and voice votes; members present signaled “aye” for motions recorded in the minutes.
