Board advises small Mother's Day event that formal noise exemption likely unnecessary; staff to confirm with police

A resident seeking a noise exemption for a Mother's Day event at 900 South Penn Street was told by the Board of Public Works and Safety on May 7 that a formal exemption is not required if the event is indoors and stays within municipal noise limits.
Constance Jones, who said Police Chief Sloan had signed off on the event informally, asked the board whether additional documentation was needed. "I came down here in April. I did my first paper April 21," Jones said. She said the event would be inside a small building with about 100 attendees and include a DJ.
A board member said, "If there's not gonna be a ruckus, if there's not gonna be really loud noise, you can continue your event without board approval if it meets ... the noise ordinances." The board offered to recess to check paperwork but ultimately recommended Jones follow the ordinance and coordinate with the police chief; staff said they would follow up to confirm the documentation on file.
The board did not take formal action on the request. Staff advised Jones that if the event plans change to produce higher noise levels, she should return with documentation for a noise exemption.
