Board approves schedule for firefighters' street collections; city union outlines charity breakdown

Jason Chaffin, president of Muncie Firefighters Local 1348, said each shift runs 4–6 p.m.; the union runs six collection shifts total with each shift staffed twice. He described the distribution of proceeds: 30% to Special Olympics of Delaware County, 30% to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (often called "Fill the Boot" or similar campaigns), 30% to Toys for Tots, and 10% to the union's local charity account that supports community sponsorships.
Chaffin told the board the collections require crews to remain available for emergency calls, which occasionally curtails collection activity; he said weather and call volume affected yields in 2024 (about $8,000) compared with 2023 (about $12,800). The board moved and approved the schedule; members asked about paperwork and signatures and directed the union to provide a signature sheet and to coordinate with the police when the dates are finalized.
The union will submit the approved schedule to police for awareness and will provide required signatures to the city clerk's office.
