Board approves telematics agreement with Argos for city vehicle GPS tracking

The Muncie Board of Public Works and Safety approved a service agreement with Argos (telemetics) to provide GPS units and telematics for the city's vehicle fleet at its May 7 meeting.
Adam Leach, the city engineer, told the board the city had previously used Samsara and selected Argos as a lower-cost option with better service. "We have selected them to be our GPS fleet provider. We were formally using Samsara. They are a bit cheaper, I think, to the tune of about $3 per unit, cheaper," Leach said. He explained every city vehicle receives a GPS unit to track locations for plow routes, patch crews and distributed field work; the system also aids safety and accountability.
Leach said the contract is year-to-year, will auto-renew unless the city gives 60 days' notice to cancel, and had been reviewed by the legal department. A board member moved approval and the motion carried by voice vote. The agreement authorizes the city to begin converting units under the new provider and to administer the ongoing service fees described in the contract.
The board did not discuss migration schedule or unit counts in detail at the meeting; Leach said he would manage implementation and noted the vendor is located in Indianapolis.
