The South Lane SD 45J3 board swore in Kevin Capener as the district’s new student representative and received reports on recent student activities, athletics and internships.
At the start of the meeting Laura introduced the new student representative and led a swearing-in. Kevin Capener took the oath: "I, Kevin Capener, do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of the United States, the constitution of the state of Oregon, and the policies of the South Lane school district... I will faithfully and impartially discharge the responsibilities of the office of school board representative to the best of my ability." The board welcomed him and moved to the consent agenda.
Student representatives reported on winter athletics and upcoming spring seasons. Reports noted that the wrestling and swim teams had podium finishers at state and district meets, the boys’ basketball team lost a play‑in game to Newport High School, and girls basketball had a season marked by strong community support. Spring sports — track, golf, baseball, softball and boys volleyball (the district’s first season for that sport) — began the week of the meeting.
Students said extracurriculars included a student-versus-staff basketball game with a halftime cake auction on March 12 and a planned car wash on March 22 (location TBD). Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) will attend state in April with about 30 students, and a career-and-technical education signing day at Lane Community College is scheduled for April 3 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Kevin Capener and other student leaders also summarized field trips and classroom experiences: a woolen mill field trip that highlighted 19th‑century manufacturing and labor conditions, lessons at science exhibits (AMSI) and an agricultural introduction course that included a visit to a local vineyard and newborn lambs. Students said internships in the high-school career center are nearly at capacity and that the theater and culinary departments raised funds through a dinner-and-show event.
During public comment, Shane Dye, the district’s pool supervisor and head swim coach, told the board both the boys’ and girls’ swim teams won District 2 championships — the girls’ first since 2002 and the boys’ first since 2014 — and thanked the board for its investment in the pool. "I wanna thank the school board for building, renovating, and operating the pool," Dye said, adding that district support has saved lives and provided student opportunities.
Ending: The board accepted the reports; staff encouraged families to attend the March registration and resource night and the April CTE signing event.
