District human resources updated the board May 21 on recruitment, retention, grow‑your‑own pipelines and exit surveys.
HR staff reported 1,554 total applications received across categories year‑to‑date, with Southern Oregon University and local community colleges among frequent applicant sources. The district has continued to recruit out of state for specialized openings and said it places priority recruiting emphasis on hard‑to‑fill positions such as special‑education and CTE roles.
The district’s Grow‑Your‑Own program supports classified staff pursuing teacher credentials. HR said 12 staff accessed a continuing‑education fund this year and that several education assistants have progressed into student‑teaching or secured licensed positions in the region. HR also reported targeted internships this year in IS Tech, maintenance and transportation, and said it is exploring summer funding with Rogue Workforce to expand paid internships.
HR staff reviewed exit‑survey themes. A multiple‑choice item showed “higher pay” as the top cited reason for leaving; open‑ended responses surfaced a mix of training/onboarding and supervisory‑support items for improvement. The district now routes exit responses to HR and relevant principals to inform improvement efforts.
Staff recognition and retention initiatives were described: monthly “Be Excellent” nominations and a new service‑pin recognition program at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 years. HR staff also noted that public rankings (Niche) placed Grants Pass SD 7 near the top of Oregon districts for “best places to teach.”
Board members asked about substitute and transportation staffing; HR reported recent in‑district job fairs produced more than 20 substitute signups and that transportation staffing has improved relative to prior periods.
