Elkhart to open four parks in coming months; Island Park set for a three-story immersive playground

Sotto said the projects include Weston Park (the former Western Elementary site) with a new playground and small soccer goals; Island Park, which will feature a three‑story immersive playground and an 18‑hole disc golf course completed last year; the Geraldine Thursby Memorial Tot Lot in the River Vista area, expected to be finished in April; and Walker Park, which will receive exercise equipment and a finished restroom facility, including an adult changing station requested by neighborhood residents.
Sotto said kickoff events will be scheduled for each park and council members and the community will be invited. Councilman Hickey asked about flood mitigation at the Lexington and Island Park locations, noting both parks have flooded in the past; Sotto said he would gather information and have staff (Jamie/Jamieson was mentioned) follow up with details.
