IDEM investigating odors at Elkhart Clinic; neighborhood leaders say soil and water testing expected

Strong Avenue Neighborhood Association members reported on an ongoing investigation into odors at the Elkhart Clinic and said the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has been conducting air monitoring and site inspections.
Nick Marks, speaking for the Strong Avenue Neighborhood Association, said the March 4 neighborhood meeting included roughly 66 attendees and that Chief Rodney Dale of the Elkhart Fire Department provided an update on an odor investigation at the clinic. According to the neighborhood report, IDEM has been involved in air monitoring and site inspections but had not identified an immediate cause; further testing including soil borings and water sampling is expected and "IDEM expects to review a full report within the next several weeks."
An IDEM representative, Tim Veach, who was described as specializing in petroleum compliance, explained the process of investigating contamination sources. The neighborhood report said small amounts of contaminants have been found to date, that vapor mitigation at the clinic is functioning, and that the situation remains under review with continued monitoring required.
The neighborhood association invited council members to the next meeting on June 3 at 7 p.m. at the Triangle of Strong, South Strong and Highland Avenues; the association also listed upcoming events including a neighborhood cleanup scheduled for May 17.
