Council approves $182,000 design agreement for John T. Myers pedestrian bridge restoration

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Lafayette City Council voted Tuesday to approve a design agreement with Versus Engineering totaling $182,000 to specify painting, selective stiffener replacement and to evaluate deck restoration and potential ADA improvements to the John T. Myers pedestrian bridge.
City Engineer Greg Grinner said bridge inspections completed in 2023 recommended maintenance on several pedestrian bridges the city owns. “With the John T. Myers pedestrian bridge, it was recommended that the deck be painted and the stiffeners be replaced on an as-needed basis,” Grinner said. The Versus agreement will produce design specifications and bid documents for those items and allow staff to evaluate future deck restoration options because the current pavers are not holding up.
Grinner also told the council the city has a cost-sharing agreement with the City of West Lafayette for this work. “We have an agreement with the City of West Lafayette and they're paying 50% of this,” he said.
Council members moved and seconded the measure, which passed without recorded abstentions. The agreement funds the design phase only; staff said the work will also assess opportunities for ADA improvements as part of future repair or restoration work.
Clarifying details discussed during the council meeting included the $182,000 contract amount, the split cost-share with West Lafayette, and that the design will cover both immediate maintenance (painting and selective stiffener replacement) and an evaluation of longer-term deck restoration options.
