Mike Hubert, Director of Development Services, said the petitioner (Mount Union North Capitol) recently purchased the building and plans to restore the venue for weddings, birthday parties, charity events and similar gatherings. "The applicant has agreed to abide by the existing maximum occupancy numbers for each floor," Hubert said, and the building has a recent program of safety upgrades including emergency exit signage, emergency lighting, an upgraded fire alarm panel and new fire extinguishers.
Hubert said private security will be hired for events using off-duty local police officers and that on-street parking and two public lots within two blocks will serve event parking. Staff recommended approval, concluding the reestablished use would not generate adverse effects on adjacent properties if the owner complies with building codes and agreed conditions.
The commission voted to send the special-exception request to the BZA with a due-pass recommendation (roll call recorded as Beecher, Osborne, Newbill, Baker, Mishler — all voting yes). The item will be heard by the BZA for final action.
