City finance staff reported on the 2024 investment highlights and the Common Council approved the city’s annual investment policy renewal on Jan. 27.
Robert (city finance staff) told the council invested balances increased about 1.8% — roughly $4.7 million — and interest income grew about $960,000 (approximately 5.3%) compared with the prior period. He said the city has been buying short-term CDs when maturities occur and building a laddered set of maturities to smooth cash flows; local banks have provided competitive quotes. He also reviewed treasury-rate charts and local economic indicators included in the packet.
The council voted to renew the investment policy for one year by voice vote. Staff emphasized the report is informational and that they will return annually with policy renewal and investment results.
Why it matters: Investment policy governs how the city manages short-term cash and risk. Small increases in invested balances and interest income reflect a modest growth in city-held investments and yield management decisions rather than new city spending.
