Gary council passes multiple ordinances and short‑term rental permits on second reading; refers one item back to committee

Councilman Washington moved to withdraw the motion to pass CPO 2025-17, and the council recorded a 9-0 vote to withdraw the motion and then voted 9-0 to refer CPO 2025-17 back to the Planning and Development Committee. The Planning and Development Committee hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, April 8 at 5:30 p.m., with a public hearing set for Tuesday, April 15 at 6:00 p.m.
On second reading the council approved CPO 2025-18, an ordinance prohibiting graffiti in Gary sponsored by Mayor Eddie Melton, by a 9-0 roll call after a motion by Councilman Halliburton.
The council also passed CPO 2025-19, a notice of additional salaries and operating budgets for the City of Gary Filming Fund for calendar year 2025, on second reading by a 9-0 vote. Council members set a Finance Committee meeting for consideration.
The council approved a group of short-term rental special‑use permits on second reading (CPO 2025-20 through CPO 2025-25). The clerk read petitioners and property addresses into the record: 917 Vermilion Street (petitioner Margaret Spann), 7300 Locust Avenue (Margaret Spann), 1101 N. Saint Joseph Avenue (John Sorek), 1924 Hovey Place (Wayne Young), 1175 Shelby/Pine Street (Margaret Spann, Northfield, Illinois address provided), and 8045 Oak Avenue (Scott Shinderberg). The Planning and Development Committee was assigned hearings and a public hearing schedule for those items.
All roll-call tallies reported in the meeting were unanimous (9-0) for the items passed on second reading and for the referral of CPO 2025-17 back to committee.
