Council creates legislative committee, names Councilman Darren Washington chair

The Gary Common Council on April 15 voted 9-0 to establish a special Legislative Committee to coordinate members' approach to state and federal legislation affecting the city and to name Councilman Darren Washington as the committee chairman.
Council members said they and staff have already testified at the Statehouse on bills affecting Gary and want a standing committee to be more intentional and coordinated when tracking and responding to state and federal legislation. Councilman Washington and Councilwoman Barnes Caldwell were cited as having recently testified in Indianapolis.
President Latham asked for a roll-call vote to create the committee and appoint Washington as chair; the clerk recorded a 9-0 vote in favor. The committee will function as a special committee of the Gary Common Council.
No ordinance or appropriation was attached to the committee's creation; council members said the group will coordinate advocacy and report back to the full council as needed.
