Fire department invites council member to engine-spec committee; new engine arrival had minor mechanical issue

The fire department invited a council member to serve ex officio on a committee to help specify a new fire engine. Staff reported the city obtained an engine after an interstate transfer; a primer-pump fitting was discovered sheared and will be repaired.
Baker City’s fire department asked the council May 13 to appoint a council member as an ex officio participant on a small committee that will help specify requirements for a replacement fire engine.
Fire personnel explained the specification process includes operational criteria (compartment space for extrication tools so crews do not have to return to the station) and input from a representative of each shift. The department said the intent is to ensure the replacement engine has sufficient compartment space so crews can respond with the necessary extrication equipment from the first vehicle.
Staff also reported a logistics update: the city closed on the purchase of a fire engine after a 15-hour drive and an engine swap with the donor agency. At the time of the meeting staff said the delivered engine developed a broken primer-pump fitting that caused a water leak; staff said they will repair the primer pump and bring the engine into service once fixed.
Council members discussed the committee invitation; one councilor (Brad) was suggested as a candidate to sit on the committee. No formal appointment vote was recorded in the meeting; the item was presented for council information and for a council member to volunteer for committee participation.
