The Sumner City Council on July 21 adopted Ordinance 29-30 amending the city's bereavement leave provisions to conform to recent Washington state law changes.
Deputy City Administrator Jeff Stephens said the state modification expands the definition of ‘‘family member’’ for bereavement leave to include pregnancy loss and to include an individual who resides in the employee's home and depends on the employee for care. Stephens said the amendment also increases the duration of bereavement leave in some instances from three days to five days to match state requirements.
Council voted to adopt the ordinance without discussion; no public comment was submitted on the item at the July 21 meeting. The change updates city code language to reflect state law as described by staff.
