City approves $105,000 amendment to AFH Design contract for Columbia Park Zoo exhibits

John Minor of Lafayette Parks presented amendment No. 2 to a contract with AFH Design LLC for conceptual design work at Columbia Park Zoo, asking the council to approve an added $105,000 for structural design and exhibit specification work.
Minor told the council the added scope covers “structural design and engineering responsibilities for both the primate area exhibits and bald eagle exhibit,” written specifications for exhibit materials, and verification that exhibit contractors meet those specifications. He said the city attorney had reviewed the change order and staff recommended approval.
Minor also noted an arithmetic error in the meeting cover letter: the existing contract total of $442,606.25, when increased by $105,000, yields a new contract total of $547,606.25. Council members moved, seconded and approved amendment No. 2 by voice vote.
Why this matters: the amendment expands the consultant’s role to include structural engineering and contractor-compliance verification for animal exhibits the public will see. The contract increase is funded from the Parks department capital budget as presented to the council, and staff said the change has been reviewed by the city attorney.
The council approved the amendment as presented.
