Lafayette Waterworks approves $581,969.71 drilling contract to test New Horizon well field potential

Lafayette Waterworks Superintendent Steve Moore asked the council to approve an agreement with Ortman Drilling for a series of test wells and monitoring work intended to evaluate a possible new well field.
Moore said the work includes installation of a 12‑inch production test well and a 6‑inch test well on the New Horizon property (north of McCarty Lane and west of I‑65), plus a 2‑inch monitoring well on the IU Health property east of Veterans Parkway and west of I‑65. The work will include test well drilling, well development, pump testing and water quality testing to confirm performance and determine design parameters for permanent wells. He gave the project cost as $581,969.71 and recommended approval.
Moore explained the city used a professional‑services procurement for this investigative phase to retain flexibility in contractor selection for testing. He said if the testing confirms expected results, the construction of the permanent well field will proceed under traditional bidding methods. The council approved the agreement by voice vote.
