At its April 10 meeting the Hammond Board of Public Works and Safety approved waivers of late rental-registration fees for two property owners after staff verified occupancy details and accepted owner statements.
Julieta Riesco appeared regarding 5225 State Line and explained she converted the property to owner-occupancy after her tenant left on Oct. 1, 2024. Staff said the property is a two-unit (front and rear); the rear unit remained continuously occupied by a tenant while the front unit was vacant to allow repairs and then became owner-occupied. Staff recommended waiving the late fee contingent on an affidavit distinguishing which unit was occupied in 2024. The board voted to waive the late fee and required Riesco to file the affidavit to document occupancy for the 2024 year.
Donna White appeared about 4749 Sheffield and explained she purchased the property in March 2024 and had a relative occupy it through July; staff said this was the first year the property was registered as a rental and recommended waiving late fees if the owner provided the required occupancy documentation. The board moved to waive the late fee; staff provided the owner with the form and payment instructions.
In both cases the board cautioned owners that future failures to register on time would likely not receive waivers and underscored the requirement to submit supporting affidavits or documentation to the licensing office.
