Council approves rezoning of three lots off Navco Drive from I-3 to GB

The Lafayette City Council approved a rezoning request to change three contiguous lots off Navco Drive from I-3 (industrial) to GB (general business), a move the petitioner’s attorney said would better match surrounding uses and encourage redevelopment.
Kevin Riley of RTS Law, representing the petitioner, told the council the three lots total about 1 acre; two are undeveloped and the third formerly housed Burkhart Advertising offices. Riley said the owner has received little interest from industrial users and that GB is consistent with surrounding properties. He said the petitioner filed a commitment limiting certain prohibited uses after discussions with city staff.
Council staff noted the area’s comprehensive-plan designation and an earlier staff recommendation of denial in the staff report (issued before the petitioner’s commitments were filed). Council members discussed adjacent land uses and the potential for an auto-related or salvage business; Riley said prospective tenants include a vehicle import-export business but no lease was finalized. After questions from council members and no public opposition, the ordinance passed on a roll-call vote recorded as unanimous (7–0).
The council recorded that the petition had received a favorable vote from the area plan commission prior to council consideration; the rezoning approval includes the petitioner’s commitments on prohibited uses filed with the petition.
