Alvin Cheeks, a neighborhood resident who said he has worked on street and signage issues for more than 40 years, asked the Hammond Board of Public Works and Safety on March 13 to complete a prior signage installation and to install “no parking this side” signs on Tapper (from Highland to Kenwood). Cheeks said inconsistent signage and heavy Sunday parking around churches and a school had created a safety hazard and could prevent large fire apparatus from responding promptly.
Cheeks told the board he had measured a large fire truck and provided the measurements to the fire department and homeland-security personnel to illustrate access problems. He said three blocks still lacked matching one‑side parking signage and described recurring congestion on Sundays when multiple services occur nearby.
Board members noted that a request from the fire department would normally be the preferred route but that any resident can raise street‑signing matters. Dean Button confirmed he was aware of the issue; the board directed engineering to inspect the area and to bring back measurements. The matter was formally referred to engineering for follow-up and will be addressed at the board’s next meeting; Cheeks said he plans to return next Thursday.
No immediate signage change was ordered at the March 13 meeting; board members asked engineering to measure the street with fire equipment and report back before the board makes a final signage decision.
