Hammond board approves demolition contract, parade permits, firefighter promotions and temporary parking restriction

The board awarded the 17–23 Summer Street demolition contract to JM Industrial Services Inc., the lowest responsible bidder, for $38,000, the board heard. The board also approved promotions in the fire department requested in a letter from Fire Chief Bernard Gazzolia, moving Craig Johnson and Samuel Gonzales from probationary to private firefighter status retroactive to March 4, 2025.

The board approved two parade permit requests from the Hammond Police Department: Saint Margaret Mary Church’s parade for April 18, 2025, and a Hammond Mohawks parade in May 2025. On traffic controls, the board approved a recommendation from Councilman Rakos to place no-parking signs on both sides of the 6900 and 7000 blocks of Parish Avenue on a 90-day temporary basis; the board voted to notify the councilman of the trial period and revisit the matter after 90 days.
The board voted to rescind an order to demolish property at 848 Truman Street after hearing that the structure had been fully rehabilitated; the rescission was approved as presented. The board also approved various disposal authorizations from the police department and set hearings and status dates for late business and rental-registration items.
The board reviewed three quotes for a Brook Forest/Parish Avenue fence and referred the three bids — $47,950 from Northwest Indiana Fence, $65,500 from Hammond Fence, and $67,760 from Fence Masters — to engineering for consultant recommendation.
Quote from the meeting: “We’re gonna have 3 quotes for that fence,” a board member said as the bids were read into the record.
