The Hammond Board of Public Safety took a series of routine administrative actions on Jan. 23, voting to approve correspondence items, permits and a set of property-status and rental-registration matters.
Votes at a glance (motions approved unless otherwise noted):
- Bid award for 28–34 Ruth Street: Correspondence from Kelly Kearney recommended awarding the bid to Environmental Cleansing Corporation at $277,525; the board approved the award.
- Hammond Mohawks Memorial Day parade: The board approved the Mohawks' request to hold a parade on Monday, May 26, 2025, subject to a security plan to be developed with the Hammond Police Department. The board stated on the record that future similar events must provide a police-approved security plan in advance.
- Renewal of amusement-device license: The board approved renewal for REMS Pool Hall (renewal requested by the controller's office).
- City Hall pest control: The board approved an annual pest-control services contract for Hammond City Hall with Rapid Pest Solutions.
- Right-of-way permits: The board approved three right-of-way permits received from engineering, noting they were primarily NIPSCO pole relocation/replacement and one NIPSCO gas work in an alley.
- Plat signature: The board approved a plat of survey for Luke's 267 Station addition and authorized the requested signature.
- New-business approvals and property actions: The board approved a first extension of a rehab agreement for 1047 Moss Street and approved an order to rescind and release the order to demolish 944 Murray Street after a title company agreed to pay outstanding fees.
- Disposal authorizations from the police department: Approved.
- Status dates set for code-enforcement matters: The board set status dates and actions for several properties, including setting 03/06/2025 for 4919 (Mitchell) to return for status with a possible 10-day notice if progress is insufficient; 02/20/2025 status dates were set for 1101 Truman and 941 Reese with photos requested for the latter.
- Late rental-registration hearings: The board waived late fees for three properties associated with 4 Pillars Properties LLC (Parkview, Van Buren and Torrance addresses) after hearing from Ericsson Sanchez; the board also waived late fees for properties owned/managed by Inan Li (6232 Monroe) and Alma Bautista (6942 Alabama) after each provided explanations and agreed to register or provide affidavits.
Most approvals were made by motion and recorded with members responding "aye." Specific roll-call vote tallies were not read into the transcript. Several motions included conditions or directions recorded on the public record (for example, the parade approval condition that organizers meet with police to approve a security plan).
