Commission staff said demolition is a critical early activity: perimeter concrete walkways and center concourse slabs will be removed or regraded so new hardwood floors and locker rooms can be installed. "The goal is to have the Sportsplex operational by late October, early November," staff said when asking commissioners to waive bid irregularities and approve the low, responsive bidder.
The request was presented after a recent round of bids and staff said they are not yet ready to award other construction packages. The commission voted by roll call, with five yes votes recorded, to award the demolition contract and to waive identified irregularities as recommended by staff.
Commission staff said the demolition contract covers removing interior and perimeter elements that are too high for the new floor elevation, demolishing some locker-room areas and preparing the structure for new court surfaces and supporting construction.
