BZA grants variances for Fire Station 6 reconstruction at 1717 E. Boulevard; construction expected to run into 2026

The Kokomo City Board of Zoning Appeals approved variances to minimum lot size (0.67 acres) and to maximum lot coverage (2%) to allow reconstruction of Fire Station 6 at 1717 East Boulevard Street.
Carrie Stranahan, representing the petition, said the city seeks to rebuild the station to improve emergency response capacity, modernize living quarters and apparatus bays, and maintain the station at its current location to avoid gaps in coverage. Staff said the existing site has been a fire station for many years, that the project will enlarge the lot and reduce nonconformity, and that the additional lot coverage is needed to ensure maneuverability for large vehicles.
Construction was described as starting in July with completion expected by the end of 2026 (roughly a 19‑month schedule). The city plans temporary relocation of apparatus during construction, but plans for exact temporary housing for vehicles and crews were not finalized at the hearing. Staff said the new station would be approximately 16,000 square feet with capacity to serve up to 10 firefighters and three pull‑through bays; current operations use one staffed vehicle at the site.
After staff and petitioner presentations, the board voted to approve the variances and adopt the petitioner’s findings as the board’s findings.
