The Kokomo City Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance reducing the required side-yard setback by six feet so petitioner Bob Walsh can build a two-car garage attached to his home at 3507 West Docking Road.
Walsh told the board the garage will be attached to his existing home and will not be an eyesore; he said the addition will not negatively affect neighboring properties or farmland adjacent to the lot. He said the requested variance is necessary because the garage must be built on the west side of the house, where driveway access exists.
A board member asked for clarification after the petitioner’s submission: the acceptable setback in the diagram was shown as 10 feet but the addition would leave 4 feet from the property line, hence the 6-foot variance request. Staff said the addition will not encroach on recorded easements and will match the existing house aesthetically. After discussion, the board voted in favor of the petitioner’s motion to approve the variance and adopt the petitioner’s findings as the board’s findings.
The board recorded the vote by voice; no audience objections were recorded.
