Bond committee, construction update: Martinez praised; Borman and High School No. 5 move into site work

The Denton ISD bond progress committee and the district’s construction team gave the board an update Tuesday that combined positive early feedback from newly opened Martinez Elementary with status reports from multiple active construction sites.
Tanya Wright, a member of the citizens bond progress committee, told trustees the committee toured Martinez Elementary and heard a legislative update from district leadership. Wright highlighted the school’s maker space, collaborative “cocurricular” rooms that allow teachers to pull students without long hallway walks, and a courtyard hill students enjoy. “I had the privilege of getting a tour by two members of our student leadership team at Martinez where I heard what their favorite pieces of the school were,” Wright said. She added the committee reviewed financial and construction updates and found the bond contingency planning had, so far, absorbed rising costs.
Construction staff then provided project‑level briefings. Caleb Strachan reported the following status items: - Borman Elementary: site mobilization and initial dirt work have begun; trailers, site protection and early utility preparation are in place. - High School No. 5: the project received a full building permit, crews have started site clearing and grading, underground utilities are being installed and geothermal wells are being drilled; work on piers and grade beams and fire lanes is upcoming. - Reeves Elementary: steel and roof decking are largely complete, second‑floor slabs and storefront systems have been installed, and interior mechanical/electrical/plumbing work and millwork are in progress. - Braswell multipurpose building: steel erection is complete for the multipurpose and support structures, slabs and some exterior work are underway, and adjacent practice-field construction is progressing.
Wright reminded the public that bond financials and construction dashboards are posted on the district construction website. (For public clarity the district’s construction site is available on the Denton ISD website.) She told trustees the bond committee asked whether rising construction costs had impacted the planned work and said the answer from the construction team was that the bond’s financial assumptions had built in escalation and those contingencies were holding so far.
Why it matters: the reports show active progress on several bond projects, early occupant feedback from one opened campus and financial monitoring intended to protect the overall bond program from short‑term cost volatility.
The board had no action on these reports but moved the bond progress item to the front of the agenda so citizens and the bond committee member could present while in attendance.
