Council unanimously approves Small Business Week, National Volunteer Week proclamations and multiple appointments

The Colorado Springs City Council approved proclamations and several appointments during its April 22 meeting, adopting resolutions recognizing Small Business Week (May 5–9) and National Volunteer Week (April 20–26), and confirming multiple appointments to city boards, commissions and committees.
Councilmember Gold read the Small Business Week resolution and representatives from the Pikes Peak Small Business Development Center, the Colorado Veteran Business Outreach Center and the Colorado Springs Chamber and Economic Development Corporation spoke in support. Lauren Shakes, associate director at the Pikes Peak SBDC, and others thanked the council for the proclamation and highlighted events scheduled for May 5–9.
Britt Haley, director of the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department, presented the National Volunteer Week resolution and outlined volunteer contributions across city departments in 2024, including 2,856 volunteer hours at the airport, more than 41,400 hours supporting public safety through the CAPS program, and nearly 4,000 volunteers contributing more than 123,000 hours to parks and cultural services.
Council also approved multiple appointments and reclassifications for boards and advisory committees, including the Fire Board of Appeals, the Lodgers and Automobile Rental Tax advisory committee (LART), and the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department Board of Review. Councilmembers acknowledged volunteers and appointees in the gallery.
Motions and votes recorded at the meeting included the consent calendar approval (with item 4BD pulled for separate consideration), the Small Business Week proclamation (motion by Councilwoman Hingeam, second by Councilmember Gold; passed 9–0), the National Volunteer Week resolution (motion by Councilwoman Hingeam, second by Councilmember Gold; recorded as passed), and appointments to boards and commissions (motion by Councilwoman Hingeam, second by Councilmember Brian Risley; recorded as passed, 8–0 on the appointments vote as recorded).
