Shaw said she believes the poster could be perceived as exclusionary and asked the council to consider whether those posters reflect Dundee’s community standards.
Shaw described visiting the post office in February to renew a passport appointment and seeing three posters announcing an office closure for Memorial Day; she said the posters appeared early and lacked any official USPS branding. She said the imagery resembled European World War II veteran cemeteries and noted that U.S. veteran markers include a wide variety of religious symbols.
Legal and council response Shaw cited a 2010 U.S. Supreme Court ruling she said limits religious displays at post offices. Council members and the mayor said they do not have direct authority over the federal postal facility but that they would raise the matter with the postmaster to share the community concern.
Ending Council members thanked Shaw for bringing the matter to the city’s attention and indicated staff or elected officials would pass the concern to the postmaster.
