Southside Elementary students, staff present after‑school 21st CCLC activities to school board

Southside Elementary Principal Jennifer Smith and staff presented the school’s 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) after‑school program to the Lake Pend Oreille School District board on Feb. 11, describing program activities, enrollment and community partners.
The program, Smith said, is in its fifth year at Southside and currently serves 37 students with six on a waiting list. “This year we are up for free applications, so our fingers are crossed just because this is such a crucial program for our rural school,” Smith said. The staff introduced students who demonstrated program work.
Director Lorraine Bee and CCLC lead Candice Bournier described scheduled activities: PE games such as line tag and parachute; art projects including oil and chalk pastels and watercolor; STEM activities using 3‑D pens, “kiwi code kits,” chemistry experiments and coding; and a homework club that uses online tools and teacher support. Student Peyton identified themselves as the program’s “STEM ambassador” and described a role that includes morning announcements and STEM lessons.
Presenters named the University of Idaho and the East Bonner County Library as community partners who contribute workshops and family events. Smith said the program was established in 2020.
Board members thanked the students and staff; trustees provided brownies to the visitors after the presentation.
The presentation concluded without board action; the board moved on to the posted agenda afterward.
