Communities In Schools reports serving more than 2,000 students with integrated supports; board hears outcomes

Moore said CIS provided more than 107,000 services across 22 campuses last year, including food, school supplies, hygiene items and community resource brokering. She reported case-management services to about 2,000 students with more than 56,000 service hours — an average far above the program’s internal target of 17 hours per student. She also reported 2,234 students served through other programs and 303 students participating in the district’s 21st Century after-school grant program.
On outcomes, Moore said 99% of CIS-served students stayed enrolled, 98% were promoted to the next grade, 93% of seniors graduated and 92% improved in their targeted area (academics, attendance or behavior). Trustees praised volunteers and encouraged community members to get involved; several trustees described personal mentoring experiences and urged community participation.
Ending: The board commended CIS staff and volunteers and asked staff to continue evaluating funding needs; trustees noted wraparound services cost money but have measurable outcomes in graduation and promotion rates.
