Evanston council approves notice of first right of refusal for Mitsubishi Chemical property

Rock O'Neil, City of Evanston Community Development Department, told the council the right of refusal covers property adjacent to Mitsubishi's existing facilities and has been renewed previously. "We get other offers on the property, but it gives them the first right to purchase that property if if they want to," O'Neil said.
The measure authorizes staff to issue a formal notice of first right of refusal to the company. O'Neil said the agreement does not obligate the city to sell the property; rather, it allows Mitsubishi to match an outside offer if the city decides to sell.
There was brief council discussion expressing hope the company would expand locally. Council member Mister Lynch seconded the motion. With no further discussion, the council voted by voice and the mayor announced the resolution approved.
The action preserves an existing option the city has granted to Mitsubishi Chemical for roughly the same site; staff noted the right had been renewed in the past. The council did not discuss any specific sale terms or future timeline for offers during the meeting.
