Council approves rental of horizontal grinder to process city yard-waste pile

The Evanston City Council on May 6 approved a rental agreement with Vermeer Mountain West for a horizontal grinder to break down the large wood pile at the city's yard-waste facility.
Public Works (presenter) explained the machine is a semi-trailer-sized horizontal grinder that will process the accumulated pile of wood collected since the last operation about five years ago. Staff said Thompson Logging previously provided grinding services but no longer owns the required machine. Staff told the council a nearby vendor would have required an expensive clutch repair or a much higher rental cost from a more distant supplier, so the Vermeer rental offered the most economical option to process the material and divert it from landfill.
Council approved the rental by voice vote. Staff said the chips and compost produced will be used for city recycling and compost programs and are sold or used in city operations rather than landfilled.
