The Vidor Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a retainer agreement with Powell Law Group for the 2025–26 school year by a 6–0 vote with one member absent at the April 20 special meeting.
Administrator comments said the district has worked with lead attorney Blake Powell in various iterations of the firm for more than 15 years and that the retainer will keep Powell Law Group as a secondary law firm the district can call on for legal needs. "They’re a second law firm that we work with. This would be approving the retainer agreement, and it's somebody that we can fall back on when we have legal needs in the district," an administrator said.
Board member Miss Gilthorpe made the motion to approve and Mr. White seconded. The board chair called for a raise of hands; the motion carried 6–0 with one member absent.
Following the vote, the board announced it would adjourn to an executive session to discuss personnel and other matters allowed by the Texas Government Code; no executive‑session actions were taken in open session afterward.
Vote record: motion to approve retainer agreement (mover: Miss Gilthorpe, second: Mr. White); outcome: approved 6–0, 1 absent.
