Kilgore ISD board approves moving ahead with KIS site design, asks for playground alternatives

Kendall, the project presenter, described the recommended playground location and said staff would provide an alternate drawing that moves the playground into the fenced area. "So you just need action to approve commencing with CDs if there are no more questions," Kendall said during the presentation.
The discussion focused on pedestrian safety, how parent traffic will flow around the playground island, and trade-offs if the district later builds a new campus elsewhere on the site. Board members and staff suggested asking playground vendors to assess space needs and provide multiple layout options; staff also proposed allowing the construction firm to develop GMP documents while the playground location is finalized.
Board member Mr. Clark moved to give Claycomb and RLM the authority to proceed with the drawings and GMP work; the motion was seconded by Mr. Snead. "I'll make the motion to give Claycomb and RLM the ability to, go with the drawings and get us our GMP," Mr. Clark said. The board approved the motion on a 6-0 voice vote.
The board also heard a separate construction update for the new high school and CareerTech Center from the district's construction representatives. The update described progress on the main entry arch, classroom wings, gym roof and interior work, and reported that CareerTech slab work was expected to be poured later in the week. The contractor noted ongoing work on structural steel, roofing, and mechanical/plumbing installs; no formal action was required for that informational update.
The board directed staff to return with an alternate site plan that moves the playground into the fenced area, and to coordinate vendor visits to determine appropriate equipment and spacing before final playground procurement decisions.
