Anti-bullying specialist reports small-number HIB and removal incidents; board affirms a GRMS HIB decision

Miss Della Fortuna, the district’s anti-bullying specialist, presented the Glen Rock Public School District’s reporting‑period HIB (harassment, intimidation and bullying), vandalism, substance and removal figures for reporting period 1 (Sept. 1–Dec. 31), noting year‑to‑year comparisons and small absolute counts.
“Each school is required by the state to have a school climate and safety team,” Della Fortuna told trustees, explaining that teams are chaired by the anti‑bullying specialist and include the principal, assistant principal, teachers and a parent. She said those teams “review complaints of HIBs of students that have been reported to the principal” and that some parents on committees do not participate in certain conversations because of student confidentiality.
The presentation grouped incidents into five categories—violence, vandalism, substances, weapons, and confirmed HIB—and summarized a separate column for other incidents that led to student removal. Della Fortuna compared the current reporting period to the past three years and said the district continues to see relatively small numbers overall; the middle school totals were higher than the high school, and “other incidents leading to removal” showed a downward trend in the high school across the three‑year comparison.
After the report the board took a formal vote to affirm the decision reported by the acting chief school administrator from a Feb. 10 closed work session concerning a GRMS HIB case (GRMS HIB case number 286912). The motion to affirm the administration’s decision was moved by Dan Quarry and seconded by Ed Hayward; the board then voted by roll call with every member recorded as yes and the motion passed.
Administrators and trustees said they will continue to monitor disciplinary patterns and that the school climate and safety teams have an ongoing role in reviewing reported HIBs and supporting positive school climate practices.
