Vidor ISD gets demolition permits, readies early work on bond projects

Vidor Independent School District construction staff told trustees Monday that demolition permits have been issued for Bridal Middle School and Oak Forest Elementary and that early site mobilization will begin this week.
Mister Bennett, the district construction project manager, said demolition permits received April 29 allow the contractor to begin demolition‑stage work and limited dirt work. “The initial focus will be on the removal of the storefront entrances at both campuses,” Bennett said. G and G has begun subcontractor contracting and will install temporary waterproof and dustproof partitions to separate construction areas from active campus areas.
Bennett said the district is working with the Sewer and Water Board on items needed for the full construction permit; he said the demo permits permit early mobilization and that the contractor expects about two months of dirt work, weather permitting. Site access at Oak Forest remains a logistical challenge; Bennett said the recommended solution is to widen the existing driveway by approximately 12 feet to create separate lanes for construction traffic and parent pickup. TxDOT has approved the approach and the district is awaiting pricing from the contractor.
Design drawings for Vidor Elementary have been received and the district has requested an asbestos abatement assessment, scheduled for May 23 while students are out of the building. Bennett said Vidor Elementary will be completed in two phases: Phase 1 builds a new building partially connected to existing structure; Phase 2 demolishes older wings (the ‘‘405 hundred wings’’), where the architect’s reports indicate asbestos in exterior envelope materials. ‘‘We have asked the abatement company to include these areas in their assessment,’’ Bennett said.
Bennett told trustees the asbestos assessments are budgeted within the project and that administrators will return with full reports at the next regular meeting. The presentation was informational; no construction contracts were approved at the meeting.
