Board hears updates on swim co‑op, robotics trip, Beijing exchange and preschool program

District leaders provided multiple operational updates and answered trustees’ questions on program partnerships, student travel and new special‑services programming.

Swim cooperative: During public comment, parent Christina Chin urged the board to support a high‑school swim co‑op. The parent said the current registration projections show interest from small cohorts over the next four years (13 rising to as many as 19 students) and thanked the board and staff for "continued support and trying to make a swim coop possible for our kids at the high school." District staff later reported that Indian Hills had sent a letter to the Big North conference requesting inclusion of Glen Rock and that the district is awaiting Big North’s response; the district will update the board after it receives that response.

Robotics: District staff reported one robotics team, the "Cosmic Goose," qualified for a post‑season international event after strong performance in state competition. The staff said the postseason event is scheduled in Monterrey, Mexico (May 22–24) and that district travel and approval will appear on a future agenda; staff said the trip will be funded in part and that logistics have been shared with the board.

Beijing Academy exchange: The district reported that the student‑exchange program with Beijing Academy is proceeding, with an information meeting that drew about a dozen parents and six students who had already completed application packets; the program will be capped at 16 students for the outbound portion (May 30–June 9) and visiting Beijing Academy students will come to Glen Rock in September/early October as part of the sister‑school relationship. Board members asked whether a written contract existed; staff said exchanges have historically operated on mutual agreements about dates and logistics and that individual contracts are used only when teachers provide paid professional development.

Special services and preschool: Staff reported the preschool program registration is on track, with an anticipated 11–15 students and separate three‑ and four‑year‑old classes plus a preschool disabled program. The district also reported strong interest in a related child development high‑school course (more than 40 students had signed up), which will pair older students with preschool participants for supervised activities.

School sectioning and scheduling changes: Staff previewed kindergarten sectioning for next year (nine kindergarten sections across the district, with Coleman Elementary expected to house a third section). The board also agreed to move the June 23 board meeting to 8 p.m. because middle‑school promotion is scheduled at 6 p.m. the same night.

Ending: Staff said the district will post updates to the board agenda when the Big North returns a decision on the swim co‑op and when robotics travel comes forward for formal approval.
