District outlines spring testing schedule, kindergarten and preschool registration, sixth-grade elective and AI tutoring rollout

District instructional leaders updated trustees on several upcoming academic and programmatic items for spring, including standardized testing dates, enrollment windows for kindergarten and the district’s new early-childhood program, a new sixth-grade elective, and a phased rollout of an AI tutoring tool called Conmigo.
The superintendent and director of curriculum outlined testing that will affect schedules: NAEP testing occurred recently, WIDA testing for multilingual learners is scheduled across two days (one in February, one in March), the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJ GPA) for juniors is set for March 11 and the larger New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) will follow in spring. Trustees were told final exams return this year for high school students and will occur shortly after the spring assessments.
On enrollment, kindergarten registration opened the day of the meeting; district staff reported 66–67 families had already begun sign-ups the first day. The early-childhood program (preschool) registration will open March 12 via a Google form; registration is first-come, first-served and requires a $75 deposit to hold a spot. Staff described the preschool space as near completion, with floors, cubbies and bathrooms largely finished and an open house planned before student start.
Instruction leaders also described a new sixth-grade elective, “Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds,” to be offered because of staffing availability. The quarterly course will emphasize physical fitness, nutrition, mental health and mindfulness, and leaders said they will develop a recess curriculum this summer to ensure recess counts toward mandated physical education time.
Finally, the district previewed Conmigo, an AI-powered, real-time tutoring and scaffolding program. Teachers and students will gain access on March 5; teacher training is scheduled March 11, and teachers will begin using the tool with students on March 24. District staff said Conmigo will be used selectively across grades and courses (including fifth grade and Algebra I) to help identify gaps, personalize interventions, support enrichment and align with the district’s MTSS work.
No formal votes occurred on these instructional topics; staff requested the board’s awareness and support as registration and pilot rollouts proceed.
