District staff to begin needs assessment for state-mandated comprehensive equity plan with June deadline

Glen Rock Public School District’s affirmative action officer told trustees the state has resumed a revised process for the comprehensive equity plan, and the district must submit a new plan by June 23.
The officer said districts must perform a needs assessment and file a plan every three years; the state’s revised process had delayed many districts’ reviews, but the new deadline requires action this spring. The affirmative action officer outlined a sequence of three resolutions the board must pass: (1) authorize the affirmative action team to perform the needs assessment; (2) authorize submission of the assessment and plan; and (3) appoint the district’s affirmative action officer for the next year.
The board was told a needs assessment examines accessibility, facilities and policy compliance. The officer provided an example from another district where inequities in coaches’ locker-room shower access were identified during a needs assessment and later remedied during construction. Trustees were told the board must approve the submission by May 19 in order to meet the state’s June 23 deadline, and that the district will file a Statement of Understanding annually in intervening years.
No vote was taken at this meeting; trustees were given advance notice that the first of the three resolutions will appear on the March 17 agenda to authorize the needs assessment work.
