Lillian Drive students demonstrate sewing projects; district recognizes staff tenure

Students at Lillian Drive School and Cove Road presented sewing and embroidery projects at Monday's board meeting, explaining classroom techniques and the skills gained from the art curriculum.

"Sewing really provides a lot of opportunity for that creativity and self expression," Sarah Carton said. Carton was introduced in the meeting as the art teacher at Lillian Drive and Cove Road and described a multi-year curriculum that begins in first grade with knot-tying and progresses through embroidery techniques by sixth grade.

Student presenters described stitches and project goals. A second-grade student, Gianna, told the board she "learned how to sew the running stitch and the catching stitch" and that she chose to sew a butterfly. Older students described using embroidery hoops, cross stitch and chain stitch and some classes turning finished work into pillows.

The board also recognized an employee milestone. A district staff member announced that Edna Kaziah had earned tenure and invited the public to join the board in recognizing her service.

Principal remarks thanked custodial staff and the PTO for supporting the event, and the meeting paused briefly after the presentation before proceeding to candidate interviews. The presentation illustrated hands-on learning in the district's art curriculum and showcased student work from multiple grade levels.
