Trustees authorize purchase of replacement mirror after repeated crashes at Montgomery-Lake intersection

Trustees in Rouses Point voted to purchase a replacement safety mirror for the Montgomery-Lake intersection after discussion of multiple recent crashes and the earlier theft of a previously installed mirror.

During discussion trustees said the intersection has been a recurring safety concern for decades, citing obstructed sight lines, parking close to the corner and vehicle speed. The board heard several possible approaches, including reinstalling a mirror with anti-theft bolts, installing solar-powered flashing lights, narrowing the sidewalk and road realignment work that would push back the curb line on Lake Street. Trustees and staff noted that narrowing the sidewalk would likely require removing trees and be costly; enforcement of parking restrictions was identified as an additional challenge because county or state law enforcement will not write village parking tickets.

Several trustees recommended soliciting resident input before making a larger change; ideas included a resident petition or a ballot/survey inserted with electric bills to measure community support. For immediate mitigation, the board approved purchasing a replacement mirror with anti-theft mounting hardware and asked staff to explore anti-theft and camera options and the costs associated with repeat theft prevention.

The motion to purchase the mirror carried by roll call. Trustees noted the mirror previously remained in place for only a few weeks before it was stolen and asked staff to budget the purchase and consider theft-resistant mounts or a camera solution if feasible.
