Local outreach coordinator urges free cancer screenings for uninsured residents

Colleen Jackson, community outreach coordinator for the Cancer Services Program of Northeastern New York, told the Village of Champlain Board of Trustees in February that CSP offers free breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening to uninsured and underinsured residents in Essex, Clinton and Franklin counties.
The program, funded by a New York State grant and contracted through the Fitzpatrick Cancer Center and CBPH, provides outreach, at-home fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kits for colorectal screening and follow-up case management. Jackson said the program connects people who test positive with the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program (MCTP) to help cover bills tied to abnormal results or diagnoses.
CSP focuses outreach in rural areas where screening rates are lower, Jackson said, and she cited American Cancer Society data that colorectal cancer diagnoses have grown about 2 percent annually among people younger than 55 since the mid-1990s and that projections show colorectal cancer could become a leading cause of cancer deaths among 20- to 49-year-olds by 2030. “Everyone deserves equal opportunity to stay protected against cancer,” Jackson said.

Jackson asked the board to help spread the word to reach residents who are uninsured or underinsured. Trustee Janet agreed to share the flyer on the village’s Facebook page.
The presentation was made during the meeting’s public-service-announcement portion; trustees did not take formal action on CSP funding or programmatic changes.
