Recreation board awards $6,000 in grants to local programs

The Skagway Recreation Board on May 7 approved two recreation grants totaling $6,000: $4,000 for the Skagway Softball Association and $2,000 for Hoopcamp, a youth basketball program.
The board confirmed the municipality’s recreation grant fund can accept applications through Nov. 15 and that the board may award additional grants up to the total available budget later in the year. The Recreation Center Director told the board there is currently $18,500 available in a special recreation fund that the borough holds for these purposes.
The board voted, by voice, to award both requests in full. The applications were described as recurring requests that the board has reviewed in previous years; staff noted the application deadline remains June 30 on some pages but that the site had been updated to allow consideration through Nov. 15.
Adam Smith, representing the Skagway Softball Association, told the board last week’s grants helped the association buy safety gear and suggested the current request would fund fence toppers, breakaway bases and other safety and field-improvement items. The association has also donated turf batter boxes back to the municipality for field use, Smith said.
Board members recorded general support for awarding both applications in full, citing the programs’ community reach across youth and adult participants. The motion to approve both grants passed by voice vote.
