Commissioner Rosenberg updated the commission on the Fairbanks Animal Shelter Fund’s charitable activities and fundraising on May 5, saying donations are steady but vet bills have been high.
Rosenberg said the fund has a 100% rating from Charity Navigator and receives donations from outside the immediate community, which provides an additional revenue stream. She told commissioners the fund’s recent veterinary bills for the past month topped $21,000 and that the fund continues to cover expenses and vet care.
She said the fund is monitoring risks that could reduce donations—lower PickClickGive dividends and job losses among donors at the university and federal levels—and that a recent inheritance in 2023 temporarily raised one-year revenue. The fund is planning a summer garage sale (typically in August) and a cleanup day this coming Saturday; Rosenberg asked commissioners and the community to consider donation opportunities and potential donated warehouse space for the garage sale to avoid high fairgrounds rental costs.
Rosenberg also noted concern about potential avian influenza impacts if the shelter needs to receive a large number of chickens and said the fund is planning accordingly.
No formal actions were taken; Rosenberg said the fund will post its nonprofit tax filing to the fund’s website after filing in mid‑May and that donors can check the fund’s financials once posted.
